Hey guys! so last time i posted, i think i was undecided on what i was going to do with my summer.. so ill start from the beginning qualified as a DM in Jan, so i wanted to work abroad, i emailed a few dive centeres, but no one really wanted to know... so i spoke to the dive center i worked for last year, and they said i was more than welcome to come back! yipee! so i am working for a dive center in Menorca. i flew out 3 weeks ago, there were a few tearfull moments at the airport, i have never flown on my own, and never traveled alone! so it was pretty scary to say the least! i mannaged to catch the flight fine, no hiccups! Phew! as soon as i landed, i was thrown streight back into work, but i am loving every min of it!! buissness is picking up - the other day we had 28 trydivers from a school in France, this was a lot for our small center to cope with, so it was a very hectic day! i have mainly been taking try divers and qulified divers in the bay opp the center, but i have dived a few amazing places! Menorca is a volcanic island, so there are plenty of caves and cavens to investigate! i will try to post some photos later. i will keep you updated!

Cool that sounds like the best way to spend a summer. I've been thinking about my gap year. Am wondering if its worth while doing something like this. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Should I do stuff first or join a volunteer project. What do you think? Am really a bit stuck. All my friends are doing things that sound dead cool, so I don't want to miss out on the opportunities.

Ooh as far as gap year stuff goes, you are sooo spoilt for choice. There are many options, you could simply travel and see what lands in your lap. It is a great lesson in life to just have the plane ticket, a passport and a few rough plans. Although things won't always go your way, you will certainly come back a stronger and more knowledgeable person. Of course the volunteering aspect is definitely an option.. for information on reef conservation options you could pop along to our main site. Are you a diver already, or are you thinking of becoming a diver? Many dive schools offer internship options taking you right through from Open Water Diver to instructor. Although in reality, I would say that six months is a very short time in which to make such a steep transition. I would go for an option where you are expected to already be a minimum of advanced or a rescue diver.. that way you already have a bit of experience under your belt. Added to which, you know you like it!! There are web-sites too that specialise in giving gap year students as many options as possible with GapYear being the most obvious place to take a peek. Good luck with your ventures, and like Nathalie, do keep us up to date with your endeavours.

Hey! Just a quick update on whats been happening:
Did my deepest dive to date, 50m to see a wreck called the franchesquita. Amazing vis, at least 40m. Large conga, moray and scorpion fish. Bloody Brilliant!!!!!
Also hit the big 200th dive, it was a cavern called Pont D'en Gill. google it, it's fantastic!
Apart from that, lots of night dives, (lead and navigated my first one alone with Q divers. They all came back in one piece, and no 'pop - up' navigation was needed! haha! Result!)
Thats about it for now!

Hey Nathalie!
That is awesome! Must admit, I am still recreational with my debths... so 40m is my deepest dive... and that was pretty cool. I keep meaning to go down the tech route.. if only for the knowledge aspect.
Congratulations on your dive no. 200! Great stuff! Get those dives in hehe... it really sounds like you are having the most fantastic time. Keep it up, and keep us posted.
Glad you are doing so well.

Well done on the nav stuff!!! I've always wondered how the guides do that. I always end up turning a corner without realising and then wonder why the guide is leading us the "wrong" way. Good job i'm not the guide.

So how did the summer end? Did you stay and carry on diving, or are you back at home now?
Hope it was all you wanted it to be ;D

I'm back home in the 'sunny' UK now, since i last posted, i have qualified as an OWSI and done my MSDT prep, so all i need now are some certs! I have also got a full time job in a dive center here in the UK, but that is soon to end, as the season is pretty much over now Oh well, i am looking for jobs for the next summer season, somewhere warm and sunny

Fantastic news Nathalie! Congratulations on your OWSI certification. May you have many students in the future. I can imagine the waters in the UK are a tad on the chilly side right now, so good idea to keep wrapped up and wait for the sunshine hehe.
