Help my hair! Every time I go on a diving trip I end up with the worrrst hair ever. It all ends up a tangled mess esp underneath at the back by my neck. I read somewhere about leaving on some conditioner before a dive, does it work? As a dyed brunette does anyone know of ways to stop my hair bleaching too... I get lighter and lighter throughout the trip, nightmare. Or should I just chop the lot? Hellllp! I want to look good while on my trip, not like a bedraggled rat.

I know how you feel. I just got back from the project and 6 weeks of sun, sand and sea has had its wicked way with my hair. I know I used leave in conditioner in the evenings loads of it… But I would be wary of putting anything on before you get in the water. Bear in mind that conditioners are not all biodegradeable, and slapping a load of it on your locks before a dive, is only going to pollute the water. I know we are talking minimal amounts here, but already busy diving resorts are reporting problems of the water being "slicked" with sunscreen. It sounds depressing, I know, and what is a girl to do? I would say, keep it tied up or plaited to prevent too many tangles and then just smother with conditioner after the dives. Any other suggestions out there?

I know this thread was started a long time ago but, for future readers I thought I would lend a hand. I have the same problem with my hair, mainly when I use a hood but, also without a hood. I have long hair and usually put it in a pony tail but, it still isn't easy to brush it out.... I have a suggestion. There is a product that I use on my horses manes and tails but, I use it myself and so do a lot of other people I know. It's called "Cowboy Magic" which you can hopefully get at a local feed store OR go into your local beauty supply and get "Bio Silk." As Cowboy Magic, Bio Silk is a LEAVE IN detangler and shine. It's clear in color and feels like wet silk (if there is such a thing, lol). If you have short hair, start with a nickle or a quarter size amount in your hands and rub it in your hair....starting underneath and work your way to the outside of your hair. If you have long hair like me double that. This stuff has saved me on dives. I put it on during longer inbetween dive breaks then brush my hair....and after a day of diving. After your hair dries (even with the salt), it'll be really soft. Cowboy Mag. is less expensive and you can get a bigger bottle for the same amount as smaller bottle of Bio Silk. Braiding hair also works but, you still get that dry hair. I keep it in my dive bag at all times.

Wow Luv2scuba! Horse product, I guess that is going to be some major heavy duty conditioner there! Unfortunately we don't get many cowboy mags over here, but I am sure we have plenty of horsey mags that might have information. I have since found that slathering heaps of conditioner (preferably the heavy duty kind) on your hair right after the last dive of the day, while your hair is still wet… even if its with salt water… really does help. At least it keeps it soft so that it is nice n soft when you get the chance to rinse it off. And the whole being on a boat out on the sea in the sun, saves a fortune on highlights!!!

Now all we need to find is something to save our nails!!! Not that I am a varnish-wearing talon queen, it would just be nice to have some kind of fingernails left after a couple of weeks' diving any ideas out there, please share your secret, as I'm certainly not alone here…

Cant say I get that problem. My nails seem to grow when I go on diving trips. Perhaps its just the extra sunshine, and I suppose I don't do quite the volume of diving over time to really trash the nails. I'd suggest a good handcream before and after the dive.
