Well this was a bit of a weird one. Yesterday afternoon it was totally roasting hot, but very very hazy. We surfaced from our last dive, to a Westerly wind that was bringing with it fine sand from the desert. In fact the boats coming in from the Dunraven and Thistegorm up in the Gulf of Suez, all got severely delayed as the skippers had to slow down to a crawl due almost zero visibility.
We are so spoilt here, and are so used to using land for our navigation, suddenly there was no land to be seen and like the Marie Celeste, boats were driving along in a little circle of cloud! Apparently all very spooky... and of course very slow!
As a result, this morning, the jetties were closed. This is at least the third time this has happened this year. But they always seem to close the gates after the event, as this morning, whilst we still had a bit of the haze, there wasn't quite the same wind. I was pretty sure we would not be getting around the corner to the Thistlegorm, as it was still coming in from that direction, but it certainly looked like the local, Tiran and Ras Mo boats could possibly have gone out.
Hey ho, it meant a day's rest for us (without pay of course, but that is the joy of being freelance!).
