A little trip report and some photos from yesterdays diving. The wreck of the Somali, and some shallow scenic diving with the resident Farne Island seals!
The first dive was around 30m, this was the wreck of the Somali. It is was quite broken up, but the boilers and some other big metal bits were still in tact. It was a cargo ship carrying everything from toy soldiers, to tubes of Colgate toothpaste and explosives! It was sunk in world war 2, by German air crafts (i think!) and now lays not too far of the nothumberland coast. The visibility was around 7-10m, which was really good, lots of Pollock and some Cod! Then there was all the usual stuff, soft corals, starfish, swimmer crabs, edible crabs and some big lobbies! Overall a very nice dive, not too cold, and not too much deco to do Oh and there are loads of jelly fish in the sea at the moment too, so i think everyone on the boat had a few stings! Sachets of vinegar are on the list for next time! Some other diver that was on the RIB found some little glass bottles and what looked like a handle from an old fashioned razor!
So that was the first dive over with, and a very bumpy ride over to the Farne Islands awaited! I was feeling pretty seasick, and so was my friend so we relished the opportunity when the skipper said we could jump in and snorkel around one of the islands on our SI! This also guaranteed us close seal interaction! yippee! After around 5mins there were approx 6 female seals swimming around underneath us, they were popping up and looking at us on the surface too!
The second dive was in the spot where we were snorkeling, a nice shallow bimble with a max depth of 10m, and a bottom time of 55mins! Very fun dive, lots of close up seals, and lot's of other sea life as well! I could talk for hours about how amazing this dive was, but here are the photos instead!
