Hi there Friendly diver, Glad to hear you are thinking of popping over to Mexico. I have not been there as yet, however our associate diving advisor Barry certainly has (in fact found himself in the middle of a hurricane, but don't let that put you off!). You are right in thinking Playa del Carmen is kind of the hub of things, but you will probably find cheaper accommodation if you venture a little out of the centre. With regards to work, I'm not sure where you have worked before, but I have heard it isn't quite so easy as in the Red Sea where work seems to be plentiful and well paid, but there is work to be had. If you are technically minded and already a cave diver, you would do well to consider getting your instructor's qualification in that, it will certainly give you an edge in a place which could be a kind of Mecca for cave divers and those wishing to learn. There are also the all inclusive hotels, if you find that there are not too many instructors needed by the dive centres, they are always looking for people to take their guests on try dives. Ok maybe not the most amazing instructor work, but certainly an option. The internet cafe is cheap too, which is good, as UK phones obviously don't work, so keeping in touch with buddies via text is not going to happen. Unfortunately, even if you buy a US phone they don't do international text!! (well that was last year, if this has changed since, please let us know) So make sure all your mateys have Yahoo or MSN messenger installed. Of course, while you are there, it would be a crime to miss out Cozumel and the Mayan ruins too (if you can bear to take a break from the diving), so make the most of your trip. And if you decide to stay, let me know and I shall be sure to pop in one day, as it is high on my list of places to dive. Here is a general site about the place, though it doesn't really go into specifics about working there etc, it could have some interesting info for you: playadelcarmeninfo.com/index.phpIn the meantime, have a tequila for me, and good luck. ;D
