Well today there is meant to be a national strike here in Egypt. Apparently people have been asked to stay at home, not go to work, not go to school, not buy food, basically strike as a protest. Recently food prices have risen sharply, which even us westerners here in Sharm are noticing (with a 60% rise in prices here in the last couple of years). But the people it is really affecting are those who could only just afford the food in the first place. So today is the day they are planning to protest. The problem is, here in Sharm, if you don't work, you don't get paid, so it whilst the intentions are good, I can't see many people actually striking, simply because they can't afford to miss a day's work. Ironic eh.

Well, much as I had expected, the strike was a bit of a non-event.
I guess partly because it is actually illegal to strike here, and it is a country in which you would not want to break the law really. Also I think people realise that they need to work in order to get paid.
So here in Sharm it was business as usual all around.
