Hello Fellow Divers ! I am not a experienced diver, just an AOW with only 30 dives... Of course my goal is to dive, dive, dive so I become more and more confident in water. One of the guide I dived with in the Philippines told me the first thing to buy should be a dive computer. As I am going to Egypt in a few weeks, am thinking about buying one. Which one would you recommend me to buy? Thanks for the tips

Hey there Carothek, and welcome to DiveBunnie... The guide you spoke to gave you some excellent advice. A computer is so important, especially if you are travelling to Egypt where most of the diving is multilevel diving, enabling you to stay in the water for an hour by shallowing off, should your air last long enough. And you will find that if you try to plan these dives on tables alone, you will struggle to keep within the no decompression limits. My first computer was a Mares, however I have since been converted to Suunto, which I find a fantastic brand of computer. As far as dive computers go, they are actually pretty straightforward to use. Another bonus is that it is such a popular brand that there will usually be someone on the boat who will be able to help you out, should you have a query. I use a Suunto Stinger, which is now one of the older models (but an excellent computer all the same, very robust). They now have the D4, D6 and D9 range. I would say that unless you are planning to go into the realms of technical diving, the D4 will provide you with all you need for recreational diving. If you are looking for a cheaper option, then there is the Suunto Gekko, which is pretty much the same as the Stinger, however it is just a bit bigger, not really suitable to wear as a watch. You can sometimes get this one for as little as £150.. bargain. I would recommend that whatever computer you go for, do get one that will work with basic Nitrox settings, as more and more people appreciate the value of diving on Nitrox. Even if this is not something that interests you at this moment. Hope that helps. Where in Egypt are you going? I am based in Sharm el Sheikh... Hope you have a great trip wherever you go.

Hello ! Thank you for the tips ! I am going diving in Marsa Alam. I hope it's good ! I have the feeling it is, I will be so happy to dive that I don't see why it wouldn't be. I know you are in Sharm, I am following you through the website and the blog for a while now. It would have been cool to get to see you in person. Maybe another time. I hope your recovering well and that you'll be able to jump into the water sooner than later. It's is my first time in the red sea , after Australia and the Phillipines. So it would be my third diving "big" experience. I am mad excited about it ! I know you are english, could you recommend a dive shop in London? Am a (new) frenchie in London... Cheers Dive Bunnie !

I had thought you might be French from your email address.. welcome both to DiveBunnie and to London (my old home town).
There is a very good diving school called London School of Diving (I think they are in the Chiswick area), and as for dive shop. I used to like browsing in Ocean Leisure London, which is right in the centre of town, behind the Embankment tube station, however they are not necessarily the cheapest place to buy kit. Diving Leisure London, based in Clapham are good value.
