Interesting stuff. I'm thinking of doing some kind of project like this. I am no scientist though, so would this be a problem?

There are many organisations that can help you with that. Many of them aimed at gap year students but not all. You can volunteer for a project and they will teach you the skills you need to do the surveys. Am sure DB did something like this sometime ago.
