Those of us in the Northern hemisphere have two good reasons to look to the skies tonight. Firstly there is the biggest full moon in 15 years with the moon being 28,000 Km closer to the earth than normal, and there is to be a meteor shower! (was that the one that we got up to watch a couple of weeks ago that didn't seem to happen I wonder?) Pop along to the Times website to read a little more about it. And don't forget to take a moment to cast a glance up tonight. Apparently the best time to appreciate the size of the moon is as it rises in the late afternoon... so I had better get myself outside about now!!

Hmmm.. so I scanned the sky, but the moon was too bright to get any chance of seeing a normal star, let alone a shooting one By the time I got to see the moon, it was well up in the sky too, so sadly I did not get the effect of seeing a huge "beach ball" on the horizon as it rose. I did get that pleasure last month however as I was on my way to the airport, and even then it looked truly enormous as it rose above the mountains!
