Wow! I just read this article about Starbucks. Apparently to prevent the build up of germs in their cold water taps, they insist on them being left running constantly! I wonder if the Starbucks here in Sharm do that?? Surely not in a desert... bad enough in the UK (they always seem to be short of water for one reason or another). The response from Yahoo readers is quite interesting too... Ooo not so popular today are they? I must admit though, despite the price (even here in Egypt) and despite their dubious practices... I am ashamed to admit, I do love their coffe though admittedly very rarely treat myself to it. Guilty or what!

I heard today that they've turned the taps off. Public pressure has worked again

That's great news. You see the Sun newspaper has done some good in the world! Here is their follow up articleAmazing what a little public pressure can do... well... they were allowing 23million gallons of water a day to go down the drain. In this day and age, that is just plain irresponsible. Especially when you consider that there are three branches in the Sharm el Sheikh area alone... and we can't be the only desert hosting a couple of Starbucks stores. To me a short blast of near boiling hot water sounds far more hygienic than any amount of running cold water anyway.

Ooo so the power of publicity does work. Good

I think they got a guilty conscience as they now give away their old coffee grains (post coffee making) for people to put ontheir gardens as fertiliser. Good eh? And it's free.

Hmmm... now I know Sharm wants to keep up to date with the latest, but sadly I was in the Naama bay branch of Starbucks today and saw that they are still using the old running tap method of keeping their spoons clean! What a shame... especially as we are in a desert where water is such a valuable commodity.
Let's hope that the news of this turn around reaches Egypt soon, so they don't continue to waste all this water.

What a waste- and in a desert too.

Ok so maybe it's time for Starbucks to redeem themselves.
I went there today (I know, I just love their coffee.. I know it is weak and I know it is expensive, but it tastes soooo nice). And got myself a bag of their freebie used coffee grounds! They are giving away the grounds (and it looks like they are re-using the original packaging, which is another bonus) for free to use as a supplement on your garden!
So I have stirred mine in with the sandy stuff n compost that makes up my herb garden and will let you know how they fare. Great stuff. ;D
